Pink Moving Tips
Here are some tips to make your move easier
Countdown to Moving Day
A household move is a major undertaking. This list will help you organize and prioritize this event.
6-8 weeks before move
- Inventory your household possessions.
- Decide which items to move and which items not to move.
- Schedule a moving sale and/or contact a charity to get rid of unwanted items.
- If necessary, order a trash dumpster to help with disposal.
- Contact Pink Transfer at (888) PINKMOVE to schedule your free estimate-ask about our starter packing kits.
- If necessary, make travel plans for your move such as airline tickets and hotel reservations.
- Check for a hazardous waste roundup in your area. Call 888-CLEANLA or go to www.888cleanla.com in the Los Angeles area.
4-6 weeks before move
- Schedule your move with Pink Transfer.
- Set a packing date. We offer professional packing crews that save you countless hours.
- If you have decided to pack yourself, start with non-essential areas such as the garage, basement, etc. It is less stressful if you start early!
- If you are moving to a new area, gather family records: medical, dental, school, birth, financial, insurance, etc.
2-3 weeks before move
- Arrange to discontinue utilities and other home services just prior to your moving date.
- Change your address with your local post office.
- Fill and transfer prescription medications for family members and pets.
- Cancel club memberships.
- Formulate a plan of where your furnishings will be placed at your new residence.
1 week before move
- Dispose of food items that require refrigeration.
- Collect all items from separate locations (office, etc.) and bring home to pack and move.
- Make arrangements for childcare and pet care on moving day.
- Close out safe deposit box. The items from your safe deposit box and other valuables, such as jewelry, should be transported in your car.
- Pack items to be carried in your car and mark each carton: DO NOT MOVE.
- Pre-pack suitcases.
- Finish all packing to be moved.
- Remember non-breakables, such as clothes, bedding, etc., can be left in dresser drawers.
Moving Day
- Remove and pack bed linens.
- Place any items that you don’t want the movers to take in a designated area of your residence or, even better, in your car.
- Save parking for the moving van if necessary.
- Take the movers on a ‘tour’ of the residence pointing out items to move and items that stay.
- Be available to answer any questions throughout the day.
- When all cartons and furnishing have been loaded on the van, conduct a last minute walk through. Check all rooms and closets for any items that may have been missed.
- Once again, show the movers the entire new residence with a brief description of each room… “this is the master bedroom, the bed goes against this wall”.
- Be available to tell the movers where each item goes as they are removed from the van and brought into your new home.
- Be sure and check each item off the inventory list on long distance moves and moves from storage.
- After the van is unloaded, if necessary, fine tune the placement of your furniture.
Packing Tips
- Use cartons of adequate size and strength.
- Pack heavy items, such as books, in smaller cartons.
- When packing fragile items, always cushion bottom of carton and between layers.
- Wrap fragile items individually.
- Place heavier items in the lower part of the carton and lighter items in the upper levels.
- Be generous with newsprint paper cushioning, it absorbs shock.
- Use clean newsprint paper. Although old newspaper will work, you will take a chance of having the ink rub off on your valuables.
- Make sure all items are firmly packed in each carton. Loose items may move during transit and cause damage. Fill the carton with paper if necessary.
- Do not overfill cartons. Make sure the tops close easily without bulging.
- Double tape and use professional tape to keep cartons from bursting during transit.
- Mark the tops and sides of all cartons and indicate the room each carton should be placed in when it arrives.
- Mark fragile items “FRAGILE”.
- Mark which carton you want to unpack first at your destination.
- Make sure all liquid containers are properly sealed. When necessary, mark the carton “THIS END UP”.
- Do not pack irreplaceable items and/or sentimental items. These items should be carried with you or forwarded by your banker/broker instead of packed with your shipment. Examples are: stock certificates, bonds, valuable papers, currency, stamp and coin collections, jewelry and copies of CDs or computer disks.
- Never pack hazardous materials such as paints, thinners, oils and varnishes; ammunition and explosives; bottled gas or propane; aerosol cans; motor oil and fuel and all other flammables.
